What is Dead May Never Die: The Story of TMJ-based Orthodontic Relapse
Relapse. It pains us all to watch our work of correcting a patientโ€™s malocclusion not last. It is especially frustrating when we struggle to explain the reason(s) our patientโ€™s bite is relapsing, or even worse, why they are now having TMJ-related symptoms after correction of their bite. What if we could have foreseen these issues in our treatment planning? What if we could have created a plan that recognized the possible sources of relapse, especially related to the TMJ and airway, and incorporated them into our treatment? In this lecture, we will explore the necessity of CBCT and MRI imaging in orthodontic treatment and how using these images can shed light on the sources of malocclusion BEFORE we start treatment so that we may prevent future relapse. For what is dead may never die, but rises again stronger and harderโ€ฆ
